Your immune mechanism finds and kills pathogens (bad cells) in your body. When a pathogen enters your body, it automatically starts defending you and will push out something as small as a shard of metal. A cold or infection is a sign that this mechanism is compromised. A slow healing wound could also mean that it is not functioning properly.

 

Leukocytes or white blood cells are part of this vital process. They seek and destroy pathogens. White blood cells are produced and stored in many different locations of the body like the spleen, thymus, and bone marrow. That is why those organs are called the lymphatic organs. Clumps of lymphatic tissue are placed throughout the body as well. They are known as lymph nodes. The leukocytes circulate through the body between the organs and nodes through the lymphatic vessels. They also travel through the blood vessels.

 

There are two types of leukocytes - phagocytes and lymphocytes.

 

- Phagocytes are cells that chew up the intruding organisms.

- Lymphocytes are cells that allow the body to remember and recognize previous intruders to help destroy them

 

 

WHAT IS AN ANTIGEN?

 

An antigen is a substance that attaches itself to every cell in your body. It lets the antibodies know whether a cell belongs to your body or whether it is a foreign invader to be destroyed.

 

 

HOW DO PATHOGENS ENTER YOUR BODY?

 

There are billions of viruses and bacteria waiting to get into your body. They can enter through cuts, your nose, mouth, and even eyes. You have a protective layer on these body parts that keep pathogens from getting in most of the time. However, when your mechanism is weakened, pathogens immediately enter your body, causing infections. Your body is able to recognize strains that have been in the body's system, but a virus can mutate itself. When it is mutated your body no longer recognizes it. Even with the slightest change your body will react to it as a different infection. With weakened defences your body will struggle to eliminate the virus. Poor nutrition and stress will further contribute to strain your inner army.

 

 

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM DETECTS AN ANTIGEN?

 

Your fighting forces detects an antigen, the cells work together to recognize this foreign substance and then respond to it. These cells activate the B lymphocytes to create particular proteins that fasten onto specific antigens. These antibodies neutralize pathogens.

 

Although antibodies can recognize an antigen and lock onto it, they are not capable of destroying it without help. That is the job of the T cells. These cells are also called killer cells. The T cells attack the infected cells and also signal other cells such as phagocytes to attack and kill as well. The process of all these cells working together is immunity.

 

 

WHAT ARE THE 3 TYPES OF IMMUNITY?

 

There are three types of immunity:

 

INNATE- Innate immunity refers to the external barricade such as the skin, and mucous membranes found in the nose, throat, and gastrointestinal tract. This wall is broken when a person gets a cut. The skin and its cells will try to heal the cut and attack germs right away. 

 

PASSIVE- Passive immunity comes from outside sources such as a mother's breast milk. Infants get this immunity when they are young because their natural defences are not as strong. It is, however, temporary and won't last the child's whole life. 

 

ADAPTIVE- Adaptive immunity develops throughout life. As children and adults are more exposed to certain bacteria, they can develop immunity to those bacteria. Vaccinations allow a small amount of a disease to be put into the body so your defences can react and build immunity to that disease.

  

 

HOW DOES IT IMPACT HEALTH?

 

The stronger your defence mechanism, the healthier you are.

Problems with this defence mechanism can lead to illness and infection.

§ GET ENOUGH SLEEP. During sleep, your body has a chance to recharge itself and to heal the damages sustained from the activities of the day. You are not using a lot of energy to sleep, so your body can use this energy to fight infections and strengthen you for the following day.

It then begins destroying its own organs. As a result of this attack, your body produces inflammatory cytokines and free radicals. The cycle is self-perpetuating. The final tally shows that silent inflammation damages arteries, destroys nerve cells and organs, compromises that, and promotes cancerous growths.

 

No matter how well you feel today, silent inflammation can put you on the fast track to degenerative disease. That having been said, preventative measures taken now to reduce inflammation can prevent degenerative diseases.
